Ozonation of Water - just the FAQs please!
What is ozone? Just a form of oxygen - regular oxygen is a pair of oxygen atoms. In this form, there are three atoms. It quickly breaks back into the regular oxygen, releasing a free radical.
What is that smell? Ever notice an odd smell after a rainstorm? That is ozone. Most people think of it as a "clean" smell. Ozone is a colorless gas that has an odor similar to smell of the air after a major thunderstorm. During the storm, lightning bolts cause it to be released. The Sun's ultra-violet rays can also cause it to be released.
What does it do?
- better than chlorine (bleach) for disinfecting - killing bacteria & viruses (quicker, no by-products)
- oxidizing properties reduce iron, manganese, sulfur - reduce or eliminate taste and odor problems
- breaks down residual trace elements of toxic chemicals and pathogens and kills bacteria (including E-Coli) on food products including meats, fruits and vegetables.
- it causes the following to coagulate/clump together - so they are easily filtered out:
- organic particles & chemicals
- iron, managanese, sulfur
Advantages of ozone?
- Ozone is effective over a wide pH range and rapidly reacts with bacteria, viruses, and protozoans and has stronger germicidal properties then chlorination. Has a very strong oxidizing power with a short reaction time.
- The treatment process does not add chemicals to the water.
- Ozone can eliminate a wide variety of inorganic, organic and microbiological problems and taste and odor problems. The microbiological agents include bacteria, viruses, and protozoans (such as: Giardia and Cryptosporidium).
What does the machine do that ozonates the water? Most ozonators have a high intensity UV light in them (or a way to create UV light). Compressed air is forced into the generator’s chamber, which then converts some of the oxygen in the air into Ozone. This Ozone is then sent through a line into a diffuser which creates ozone-saturated bubbles. Mixing with water at this point causes the combining with undesired particles in the water.
Corona Discharge (CD) Ozone Generation
In this case, ozone is produced with a high voltage electrical discharge. Called "corona discharge" or "CD", it is the method most commonly used to generate usable amounts of ozone for most water treatment applications. The idea is to actually create a small, controlled lightning storm, which involves producing a constant, controlled spark (corona) across an air gap through which a prepared feed gas is passed. This feed gas may be air that has simply had most of its moisture removed or air with enhanced oxygen levels.
Other uses for the water:
- Energize Drinking Water: For an 8 oz. glass of water, use the bubbler for 2 minutes. For larger containers, it could take 5 to 15 minutes. Be sure to ozonate your water right before you drink it. You will notice an increase in your energy level within minutes because of drinking the extra oxygen. Ozone also purifies the water by stabilizing chemical residues such as chlorine…ozone is also strong enough to kill some of the most virulent pathogens.
- Food Sterilization: There is no better or faster way to sterilize meat, seafood, fruit or, vegetables. At retail stores, these products are exposed to bacteria. To sterilize your food, fill a bowl with cold water, and place the tube with the bubbler into the water for 5 minutes. Take the bubbler out of the bowl, and put your meat or produce in the ozonated water for 4 minutes, then strain the water out. Your food will taste distinctively fresher, especially seafood, and it will make your vegetables extremely crisp!
- Toothbrush Sanitization: Toothbrushes are often infected by airborne bacteria. Soaking your toothbrush in ozonated water for a few minutes destroys any bacteria on the bristles. Ozonated water is also good as a mouth wash for mouth and yeast infections.
- Purification of Fish Tanks/Aquariums: Ozone kills all bacteria and algae in a fish tank, and has no harmful effects on the fish. For a 10 gallon tank, ozonate an 8 oz. glass of water for 5 minutes, and pour it into the tank using the net to diffuse it throughout the tank.
- Bath Water: Ozone is more effective than chlorine at killing bacteria and other microorganisms in bath water and in spas. For a typical-sized bathtub, ozonate the water for a half hour before you actually are in the tub. The Ozonator will handle up to approximately 5 gallons of bath water.
- Athlete's Foot: Ozonate a container of water that is large enough to submerge your feet. Then, place your feet in the water while ozonating for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Plant Fungus: Ozonate a glass of water for 2 minutes, then water your plants. This will result in healthier plants and it will also reduce odors that fungus-infected plants produce.
What does Bob Beck say? Water that has been properly ozonated offers rapid, safe, and totally natural cell oxygenation without free radical damage. Universal detoxification is accomplished by oxidation of dead and neutralized pathogens, without the need for colonics, heat, hot tubs, exercise, liver and kidney flushing, herbs or other modalities. While these treatments have their uses, Bob Beck feels they are not necessary if ozonated water is used daily with the other three protocols he recommends.
